Laughing Gas: Hilarious National Comedy Center's Worth A Visit

ES Staff  |  Stand-Up Comedy

If you and your loved ones are searching for something fun to do together this summer, how about visiting a national treasure that is only an hour-and-a-half trek away from the heart of Buffalo, New York?

If you live in WNY and haven't visited the national comedy center, ask yourself how you've missed a museum where most visitors say they laughed for four hours straight.

Expect to chuckle whether this is your first trip there or your first time back in a while; either way, you won't be disappointed.

"It's going to be fun, you're going to learn, you're experiencing the story of our uniquely American comedy heritage, but most of all you're laughing, and who doesn't like to do that," said Journey Gunderson, Executive Director. "It's going to be fun, you're going to learn, you're experiencing the story of our uniquely American comedy heritage."

Check out the new displays on Johnny Carson and Carl Reiner, as well as some legendary objects such as Charlie Chaplin's cane, Lucy's distinctive polka-dotted dress, and the puffy shirt from the Seinfeld TV show.

There is something for every member of the family, regardless of age or sense of humor, and it is not just about the history. On their interactive screen, which is 70 feet long and features a comedy continuum, you will be able to see your own sense of humor spread out in front of you.

When a guest "swipes" their wrist band, which contains a profile of their own unique sense of humor, what "expands before them is a never ending web of links in comedy," according to Gunderson.

The majority of vistors stay for about three to four hours, and at the end of their time there, they receive a humor analysis that allows them to evaluate their sense of humor relative to that of their family and friends.

"It's invigorating to be among laughter and smiling, something I think everyone needs right now," said Gunderson. "It's also something I think everyone needs right now."
