For many music fans, no one sang better than Whitney Houston, and she is still collecting receipts for it. Houston just became the first Black artist to earn her third diamond-certified album.
According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Legacy Recordings, “Whitney” (1987), Houston’s second album has now sold over 10 million copies. Whitney joins Whitney Houston (1985) and The Bodyguard soundtrack (1992) with diamond status.
Houston’s second album had four tracks that hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All,” “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” also won a Grammy award
Houston was also voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2020 class. She will be posthumously inducted on Nov. 7. The ceremony will air on HBO at 8pm.
