'Promising Young Woman' Pays Back Pain, One Trifling Guy At A Time

ES Staff  |  Indie Comedies

When a good girl gets drunk, will a good guy help her get home safely? What if she’s hot, and he finds out that he’s really not a nice guy after all?

In Promising Young Woman, several guys are about to take that dark trip down discovery lane, but not because they’re soul searching. No, they’ve run into Cassie, drunk at a bar, and decided to help get her home “before someone else preys on her”.

The problem is, each of them rethinks it before doing their good deed. Cassie is so gone she doesn’t know what’s happening, and the opportunity to sleep with her proves too tempting to resist.

The bigger problem -- which they soon find out -- is that Cassie isn’t drunk after all...and she’s not happy. Cassie is on a mission to tear down the criminal system, which often protects abusers and rapists over victims. She had once been a medical student, but she dropped out after her best friend Nina was targeted and hurt.

Promising Young Woman stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie, and filmmaker Emerald Fennell slowly unfurls what happened to Nina as the tale progresses. This isn’t a simple revenge story, though. Nina’s trauma and Cassie’s conquests are about something much bigger and more sinister.

Promising Young Woman also stars Bo Burnham as Cassie’s new boyfriend Bo and introduces an interesting plot twist. How will she continue her scorched-earth-style march through manhood when she’s finally found someone who might help her let down her guard and reconnect?

The movie, brought to us by Killing Eve’s second-season showrunner, just picked up a Best Picture nomination for the 2021 Academy Awards, shocking many in the industry with such high acclaim for a debut film. Regardless of whether or not Promising Young Woman caps its stellar run with Oscars, Fennell has cemented herself with Hollywood’s A-list.

Timing is crucial. It's an emotion. Cooper Raiff, a 25-year-old writer, actor, and director, is all too aware of this.
