Smash Hit Musical "MJ" Rides 4 Tony Awards To Riches In Broadway Box Office
"MJ," the smash Broadway musical about the King of Pop, saw ticket sales surge after winning four Tony Awards and being televised.
The Michael Jackson show lost best new musical to "A Strange Loop," but Myles Frost won outstanding actor in a musical, and it made $1,661,000 after the Tony Awards. It was the biggest ticket office rise on Broadway last week.
Lia Vollack, the primary producer, said, "One of the advantages of being Tony nominated is performing on the Tonys and bringing our production in front of so many theater enthusiasts."
"A Strange Loop" saw a post-Tonys earnings jump of $168,998 to $845,313, a record high for the program.
"Six" and "Paradise Square" performed well, with Joaquina Kalukango winning best actress in a musical.
The 1992 "Dangerous" tour preparation scene of "MJ" examines Michael Jackson's childhood with songs including "ABC," "Black or White," "Blame it on the Boogie," "Bad," "Billie Jean," "Off the Wall," and "Thriller." Christopher Wheeldon won the Tony for choreography.
"MJ's" nationwide tour will begin in Chicago in July 2023 and end in Charlotte in September. Since Vollack was in London, a West End play was expected. Since the Tony Awards, the show has sold out on Broadway, and advance ticket sales are soaring.
Vollack intends to find another outstanding executive like Frost because "MJ" is not a star vehicle. She believes there is amazing talent in the world and hopes to find prospects in various firms for years to come.
On June 12, 4.22 million people watched the Tony Awards, up from 2.75 million in September. Twitter users were shocked at Frost's moonwalk during "Smooth Criminal."
Vollack added, "Any show that performed this season deserves a Tony."
"Shuffle Along," "Tootsie," and "Almost Famous" are among Vollack's past Broadway credits.
